LHP Banks earns SAL Pitcher of the Week

Starting pitcher tosses first 9-inning CG-SHO on record for I's
April 26, 2016

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (April 26, 2016) - Left-handed pitcher Tanner Banks earned South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week honors for the week of April 18-24, the league announced Monday. Banks tossed a 9-inning complete game shutout on April 20 at West Virginia in his lone appearance of the week to become the first Kannapolis Intimidators pitcher to work nine scoreless innings since 2011.

Banks earned a win against the Power, improving to 3-0 on the season while lowering his ERA to 1.42 through three starts in 2016. He worked around four hits and a walk while striking out five in the outing. The Intimidators have not had a starting pitcher throw a 9-inning complete game shutout since at least 2005. The last Kannapolis starting pitcher to work nine full innings came June 18, 2011, when Spencer Arroyo spun nine scoreless innings in an Intimidators' 12-inning win, 1-0, against Greensboro.

The Chicago White Sox selected Banks in the 18th round of the June 2014 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Utah. In 2015, he made eight relief appearances with Kannapolis before joining the starting rotation of Advanced Rookie Great Falls, going 5-5 with a Pioneer League-best 2.51 ERA in 14 games (14 starts) for the Voyagers en route to being named a co-recipient of the Logan Hurlbert Pitcher of the Year Award in the PL. Banks, a mid- and post-season All-Star in the PL in 2015, served as the league's starting pitcher for the 2015 PL All-Star Team.

Banks is slated to start tonight's game in Augusta as the Intimidators open a 3-game road series against the GreenJackets (San Francisco Giants) at Lake Olmstead Stadium. Kannapolis embarks on a 7-game road trip to Augusta and to the new Columbia Fireflies (New York Mets), and fans can hear all the action live on the Kannapolis Intimidators Baseball Network via IntimidatorsBaseball.com. The team returns home to Intimidators Stadium supported by Carolinas HealthCare System on Wednesday, May 4, for a 4-game home stand.
