Wilkins Named IL Batter of the Week for Second-Straight Week

July 28, 2014

(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) - For the second consecutive week, Charlotte first baseman Andy Wilkins is being rewarded by the International League. Wilkins, who hit five home runs with 16 RBIs last week in eight games, was named as the International League's Batter of the Week for the period from July 21-July 27, as announced by the International League of Professional Baseball Clubs, Inc. earlier today. The award is the third for Wilkins in his career. He earned International League Batter of the Week honors last week (July 14-20) and also last season (July 15-21, 2013).

Wilkins had another remarkable week at the plate for the Charlotte Knights. The Tulsa, OK native hit .467 (14-for-30) with 10 runs scored, three doubles, five home runs, and 16 RBIs over eight games. He is hitting .532 since the All-Star Break.

For the season, the University of Arkansas product is hitting .286 (108-for-377) with 59 runs scored, 26 doubles, one triple, 26 home runs, and 70 RBIs in 97 games with the Knights. He leads the IL in home runs (26), RBIs (70), total bases (214), and extra base hits (53). The Charlotte slugger is second in slugging percentage (.568) and has hit a home run once every 14.50 at-bats, which is tops in the IL.

Last week, Wilkins became the fourth Charlotte Knights player to earn weekly honors from the IL this season. RHP Scott Carroll (April 7‐13), LHP Charlie Leesman (May 5‐11), and LHP Eric Surkamp (June 16‐22) all earned IL Pitcher of the Week honors earlier this year.

The Knights will conclude their four-day, five game series with the Louisville Bats from Louisville Slugger Field tonight with a 7:05 p.m. game. Pre-game radio coverage of tonight's game begins at 6:50 p.m. on ESPN Radio 730 AM, WRHI (94.3 FM and 1340 AM) and online at www.charlotteknights.com. The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights" Matt Swierad will have the call for all of the action. The Knights return home to BB&T Ballpark to open a four-game series with the Durham Bulls on Tuesday, July 29.
