MOBILE, Ala. (April 21, 2018) - The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels, mustered just three hits and fell 3-1 to the Mississippi Braves in the series opener Saturday night at Hank Aaron Stadium.
Jose Rodriguez (1-1) struck out eight batters in 5 1/3 innings and did not issue a walk. However, he gave up three runs, two earned, on four hits and took the loss.
Jake Jewell pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings in his sixth relief appearance. He has only allowed two runs in 11 innings pitched. Ryan Clark tossed a pair of scoreless frames in his second Double-A outing.
Kyle Wright (1-2) went a career-high six-plus innings and did not allow a run in his fourth start of the season. He gave up just one hit, a first-inning single, and struck out four in his first professional win.
Wade Wass scored the only run for the BayBears (7-8) on a fielding error in the eighth inning.
Austin Riley went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two doubles. He leads the Southern League with 13 extra-base hits. Jonathan Morales drove in the other two runs for the Braves (7-9) with a groundout in the second and an infield single in the sixth.
The BayBears continue the five-game home series against Mississippi Sunday at 2:05 p.m. CDT. Right-handed pitcher Griffin Canning (0-0, 7.36 ERA) is scheduled to make the start against southpaw Mike Mader (1-0, 2.79 ERA) for the Braves.
