Strong bullpen effort helps Tacoma split series in Salt Lake

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The Tacoma Rainiers (40-36) moved back to four games over .500 and earned a series split against the Salt Lake Bees (43-33) with a narrow 5-4 victory on Sunday afternoon at Smith's Ballpark.
Designated hitter Gordon Beckham led the way on offense for Tacoma, going 3-for-5 with a double and one RBI. Center fielder Ian Miller (1x5, R, 3B, 2 RBI) drove in a pair of runs, while first baseman Seth Mejias-Brean (2x5, 2B, RBI) and second baseman Danny Muno (2x4, R, RBI) both checked in with multiple hits.

Tacoma starter Bryan Evans (1-0) - making his second start of the year with the Rainiers - worked five innings and allowed four runs on four hits while walking two and striking out five. He earned the win, his first of the year.
The Rainiers got exceptional work from Darin Gillies (2.0 IP), Tyler Higgins (1.0 IP), and Shawn Armstrong (1.0 IP) out of the bullpen. They combined to allow just two hits while walking one and striking out four. Armstrong worked a scoreless ninth inning to collect his fifth save of the season.
The Rainiers return home to Cheney Stadium to host the Las Vegas 51s on Monday night at 6:05 p.m. PT. Tacoma left-hander Ross Detwiler (1-1, 5.63) will get the start, while Las Vegas has not yet named a starting pitcher.
