Despite scoring four runs in the fifth inning, the Intimidators dug themselves in a 5-0 hole that they could not get out of, as the Suns took game two of the four-game series, 6-4, Sunday night at Intimidators Stadium supported by Atrium Health.
Yosmer Solorzano (L, 1-6) got the start for Kannapolis, as the right-handed pitcher from Venezuela walked three batters in the first but found a way to strand all three Hagerstown runners. In the second, Omar Meregildo led off with a double into left field, followed by a Kameron Esthay hit-by-pitch, putting runners at first and second for Juan Pascal. The Hagerstown third baseman laid down a well-place bunt down the first base line, as Solorzano's only play was at first.
After a sacrifice fly off the bat of Yasel Antuna, bringing Meregildo in to score, Cole Freeman reached on a swinging-bunt to third base, allowing Esthay to score the second run of the inning. One batter later, Gage Canning cranked his first homer of the season deep over the right field wall, giving the Suns a 4-0 lead.
With both Brigham Hill (W, 1-3) and Jake Elliott tossing scoreless innings in the third and fourth frames, Hagerstown added on another run in the fifth, using a single from Nick Choruby to move Jake Scudder to third and a groundout to short off the bat of Meregildo to score Scudder.
The Intimidators woke up the bats in the fifth, as Carlos Perez smacked his second single of the game into left field to lead off the inning, followed by back-to-back walks to Johan Cruz and Evan Skoug. With bases loaded and only one out, Nolan Brown slapped a 1-0 pitch into the left field corner, clearing the bases for Kannapolis, helping close the lead to two runs, 5-3. Next up, Luis Curbelo hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Brown to pull the Intimidators within one run.
In the eighth, Cole Freeman doubled into left field, moving to third on a wild pitch by Kevin Escorcia. Two batters later, Jake Scudder hit a sacrifice fly to Tyler Frost in right, proving deep enough to score Freeman.
Kannapolis will lean on RHP Zach Lewis (2-3, 3.35 ERA) to earn the second win of the series against the Suns' RHP Tomas Alastre (3-2, 4.93 ERA).
