MOBILE, Ala. (May 14, 2018) - Griffin Canning , Greg Mahle , Adrian Almeida , and Ryan Clark combined to throw the second no-hitter of the season for the Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Angels, just 16 days after the first one on April 28 in Montgomery. The BayBears blanked the Birmingham Barons 9-0 Monday night at Hank Aaron Stadium.
Canning pitched the first 4 1/3 innings and struck out eight batters. He walked two batters and allowed one to reach on a fielding error. Mahle (3-0) retired all five batters he faced and fanned three. Almeida and Clark combined to issue five walks over the final three innings but kept the Barons (18-20) out of the hit column. The BayBears (18-19) struck out 13 Birmingham batters in the gem.

Mobile plated four runs in the first inning against Brandon Brennan (2-1) and tacked on five more runs of insurance later in the game. Matt Thaiss matched his career-high with four hits, including a triple and two runs scored. Taylor Ward hit a three-run homer in the eighth, his sixth long ball of the season, to cap the scoring. It was Ward's team-high 13th multi-hit game of the season.
White Sox top prospect Eloy Jiménez was held hitless for the second time in the series, following a three-hit game Sunday. He went 0-for-4 with a strikeout.
Monday's no-hitter was the third in team history and the first thrown at home by a Mobile squad in 22 seasons at Hank Aaron Stadium. The 2018 BayBears are just the second team in Southern League history to throw two nine-inning no-hitters in the same season, joining the 1971 Columbus Astros.
